Australian
students with first class honours degrees are usually awarded
either an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or an equivalent
scholarship from the University of New South Wales (UPA). However,
only a handful of such scholarships are awarded each year, thus
many capable students miss out on studying for a postgraduate
degree. The School of Physics is now pleased to announce a number
of newly created Postgraduate Assistantship (PA) positions intended
to provide a reasonable level of partial financial support for
higher degree (MSc/PhD) candidature in physics. In addition
to being enrolled in a postgraduate program, students awarded
a PA position will take part in the School's undergraduate teaching
activities thereby gaining valuable teaching experience.
PAs will receive a (taxable) stipend of $10,000, $5,000 or $2,500
p.a. (according to the scholarship) while they are enrolled
in a postgraduate program at the School of Physics of the UNSW.
(i)
PA10
PAs will receive a (taxable) stipend of $10,000 p.a. while they
are enrolled in a postgraduate program at the School of Physics
of the UNSW. The PAs are expected to undertake teaching duties
for nominally 10 hr/week during session times, which involves
24 weeks per year.
(ii)
PA5
PAs will receive a (taxable) stipend of $5,000 p.a. while they
are enrolled in a postgraduate program at the School of Physics
of the UNSW. The PAs are expected to undertake teaching duties
for nominally 5 hr/week during session times, which involves
24 weeks per year.
(iii)
PA2.5
PAs will receive a (taxable) stipend of $2,500 p.a. while they
are enrolled in a postgraduate program at the School of Physics
of the UNSW. The PAs are expected to undertake teaching duties
for nominally 2.5 hr/week during session times, which involves
24 weeks per year.
Training
and ongoing mentoring will be provided by the School to assist
the PA in developing valuable teaching skills.
The
PAs are expected to undertake teaching duties for nominally
10, 5 or 2.5 hr/week during session times (teaching sessions
total 24 weeks per year). These PA positions are subject to
a probationary period and are renewable: a Masters candidate
would be expected to receive support through the PA scheme for
up to 2 years, a candidate registered for a PhD degree could
expect support through the PA scheme for up to 4 years. PAs
will also have the opportunity to seek additional funding through
special-purpose research scholarships. For example, international
students might wish to take a scholarship to cover their fees,
together with a PA position to cover living expenses.
