UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES

Bachelor of Science
The Bachelor of Science is the basic degree offered by UNSW. Physics may be studied as a major or minor within the 3-year program. This degree is extremely flexible and the wide variety of courses available to choose from allows you to tailor your degree to fit your interests and career aspirations. For instance, you may decide to combine your physics studies with courses from another science discipline such as Mathematics or Biology, or you may include courses from other faculties of the university such as Arts or Commerce. Students who perform well in the Bachelor of Science may choose to complete a research-oriented honours year, with a fourth year of study.

Bachelor of Advanced Science
The Bachelor of Science (Advanced Science) is a program designed especially for more able students. Some of the features of this degree are the opportunity to concentrate on an area of science you are interested in, and there are some courses which are only available to Advanced Science students. A fourth, honours year is automatically included in this degree.

The School of Physics offers four study plans in the Bachelor of Science (Advanced Science). These are: Physics; Physics and Astronomy; Physics and Computing; and Mathematical Physics.

Combined Degrees
Physics can be taken at UNSW as a major component of several combined degrees. These degrees enable students to match a Science degree with another field of study, opening up an even broader spectrum of career opportunities. Studying combined degree programs allows students to graduate with two degrees in less time than if the degrees were completed one after the other. Students who perform well in physics have the option of completing an extra, Honours year. The following degree combinations are available:
Commerce/Science
4 years full time
Science/Law
5 years full time
Science/Arts
4 years full time
Science/Education
4 years full time
Science/Engineering
5 years full time

Assumed Knowledge
Although there are no formal prerequisites for entry into undergraduate physics at UNSW, it is assumed that students will have completed the equivalent of HSC Mathematics (Extension 1) and HSC Physics. Students without these are advised to enrol into the UNSW Physics and Mathematics Bridging courses, held every February.
